Chapter 9

“Oh, my God, I recognize that Hummer,” Mina cried the next day as she and Jake drove onto the lodge’s property. It had taken them only about an hour to get to Cherokee from Asheville. Now Mina was staring at the black Hummer.

Jake pulled the SUV behind the Hummer on the lawn in front of the cabin Mina shared with her grandfather. “Whose is it?” he asked casually.

“My father’s,” Mina said, reaching for the door’s handle. “I asked Grandpa not to tell my parents anything until I got home. Their being here can’t be a coincidence. Raleigh’s nearly five hours away.”

Jake reached for his door’s handle, too. “Give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe your family just wanted to surprise you.”

Jake could be right—not about her folks wanting to surprise her, but about there being more relatives besides her dad here for a visit. He probably brought her mother and possibly one or all three of her sisters with him.

Mina looked at Jake. “Brace yourself, you’re about to meet my family, and they’re not cute and cuddly like Grandpa.”

“I can’t wait,” said Jake optimistically.

“Try to hang onto that attitude,” Mina said ominously.

“They’re here!” they heard a female voice screech. Mina’s youngest sister, Meghan, came bounding down the front steps of the cabin and running to meet her. Mina was enveloped in her arms in seconds.

“M, are you all right? We were so worried,” Meghan whispered in her ear.

“I’m fine, sis, really. I’ll fill you in later, all right?”

Mina looked over Meghan’s shoulder and saw her entire family spilling out of the cabin: her father, ex-army general Alfonse “Fonzi” Gaines, her mother, Virginia Beck Gaines, and the other two of her sisters who still lived in Raleigh, North Carolina: Lauren and Desiree.

Her grandfather walked onto the porch but didn’t venture down the steps into the yard.

Mina was grinning by the time she’d been hugged by everyone.

Mina grasped Jake by the arm and pulled him forward.

“Everyone, this is DEA Special Agent Jason Wolfe,” Mina introduced him. “Jake, this is my family.”

“Good to meet you, young man!” boomed the general, coming to vigorously pump Jake’s hand. “I’m Mina’s father, Alfonse.”

Jake smiled at the tall, dark-skinned and well-built ex-army general who, with his bald head, made Jake think of Samuel L. Jackson.

“It’s a pleasure, sir,” Jake said politely, smiling.

Then the general presented his wife. Jake gazed into the upturned face of the beautiful, petite woman, a woman whom he could see Mina got her looks from. They had the same golden-brown skin, abundant, wavy black hair—although Mrs. Gaines’s was liberally laced with silver—and dark brown eyes. He felt those sharp eyes assessing him as she shook his hand. He hoped he measured up in her estimation. But he was determined not to let it bother him if he didn’t.

“My wife, Virginia,” Alfonse Gaines said with pride.

Crinkles appeared around her eyes as Virginia Gaines smiled up at him. “My daughters have a penchant for rescuing handsome men,” she said in a well-modulated voice.

Jake didn’t know what to make of that statement, so he simply said, “Mrs.
